During this project I grew in many different ways as a digital artist. I learned how to take pieces of clips and put them together so they execute smoothly and blend together. How to fade music in and out over b-roll. How to light and frame an interview properly. Coming in to this project with little knowledge on how to make and edit a film made it a lot harder to well execute it, but it taught me a lot. I was struggling a lot on imovie trying to figure out how everything worked. I don't think I could've gotten the short film done without the help from my partners (Kenzie, Husai), and the help from Jacob and Roxy. What I learned throughout this project as a digital artist is only the beginning. I can’t wait to expand my learning to make beautiful and exquisite work.
My group thought settling in space and orbiting Earth in a circular motion was the best option. This way we could see when Earth is sustainable again. One thing all humans need in order to live is gravity. Space doesn’t have that though, so we had to figure out how we were going to achieve it. We used centripetal force to generate artificial gravity for the ships. In order to conduct the rotation we had to use torque, so we could enable the centripetal force in order to create the gravity. Newton’s 1st law states “an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion, unless it is acted on by a force.” Meaning the artificial gravity created will stay in motion unless a force is acted on it. Newton's 3rd law states “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” If the gravity is not balanced there will be this push and it will create problems.
Newton’s 2nd law, force equals mass times acceleration, could be represented in the shuttles commuting from the settlements and then back to Earth. For example it would require less energy to launch a smaller shuttle into space compared to a larger shuttle, resulting in saving more resources. Newton’s 3rd of motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This can be represented by the shuttles as well, a shuttle will burn the propellant and shoot the hot gases out the exhaust, which propels the shuttle of the ground and into the atmosphere.
I would say my greatest strength during this project was refinement. There was always changing, editing, cutting things in and out of the film going on. I went through a bunch of different film drafts in this project to get the final product. My group was always changing ideas on where we wanted to settle and live. I also had Kenzie fix time lapses when they didn’t look the best. We wanted the best end product. That’s why we went through all that refinement to get to that point.
I think my greatest area for growth was communication. I was lacking my communication skills when our group was designing our settlement. We all had our own ideas on what we wanted and sometimes it was just hard to share mine, because they couldn’t understand or follow it. If I would’ve used that skill a little better my group wouldn’t of been so confused.
